This activity includes excerpts from the Primary Source reading of Frederick Engels's essay Conditions of the Working Class in England, that has been chunked into paragraphs with comprehension questions and a vocabulary preview.
Students are also asked, before they read, to "source" the reading--to determine the reliability of Engels as a witness to Manchester. If you are working on DBQ skills, this can help students to look deeply at a Primary Source.
It also includes an individual summarizer activity as well as a group project assignment.
This activity, if done entirely in class would take about 2 1/2 50 minute class periods. However, parts can definitely be done as homework if you are pressed for time. I've uploaded it as a 2011 Word Document so that you can modify it as you see fit for your particular group of students.
