Are you looking for a way to gain your students' attention about the Holocaust? Do you want to make sure that they really GET IT! I mean not the "Oh I get it looks and statements that kids can give you. I mean that, real, in depth realization that the Holocaust happened to real people, and that it changed the world, one person at a time. Try this activity and you will be very happy with the results.
In this activity, students read the words and see a picture of one Jewish survivor. In his own words he expresses to students how his life was changed. Utilizing one picture that is included, the idea of how his life was changed by the war is brought to life for students of all ages. This is done through the use of reading fluency teams to discuss the primary source document provided, as well as, through the use of thought questions. With these thought questions, you will receive a graphic organizer to help your students create well-thought out, and well written, responses using the ACE strategy. This strategy teaches students to answer the question in the first sentence, cite a quote from text to support their answer, and explain what the quote means or how it supports their answer in the third sentence. This strategy is a great addition to assist students with the rigor of the common core curriculum.
