Based on the Roman ambassador Priscus' account of a dinner party hosted by Attila the Hun. The activity asks students to read between the lines and detail the type of man Attila was. I usually read the one page account aloud or with students and then tell them the task they must complete. To find out the type of man Attila was students are forced to reread again and again to make sense of the text. This is of course what they must do with any difficult expository text.
In addition, the activity asks students to draw a scene from the dinner party itself once more forcing them to grapple with the text. Seeing that Priscus did most of the work on this one, it's hard to justify a high price tag for this activity. Thank you and keep making your students think and read deeply.
