This is a close read activity for the Preamble of the American Declaration of Independence. This can be completed as a whole group, small group, or independent reading activity.

Students are encouraged to interact with the text, ask questions, and annotate the text to form better understandings of the text. This Close Read activity works for all levels of readers, including struggling readers and ELL students. Teachers can lead students through each section and demonstrate how to annotate the text as they proceed through the document. Advanced students would be able to work mostly independently or in small groups with minimal teacher help. It includes academic vocabulary already defined.

Included in the resource is the primary source document, a teacher directions page, and key ideas page. This activity can take between 30-60 minutes depending on the level of your students.
