This power point lesson on primary sources is an introduction for third through fifth grade students to learn what primary sources are and by completing a photo analysis graphic organizer will learn about life in the past. My state of Tennessee is including more primary documents on the state test so I am incorporating more of them in my social studies lessons. The kid friendly photo analysis graphic orgaznier is based on their analysis questions.
My social studies lessons need to be concise and compact since time is so limited. This lesson includes a short whole group and small group/partner activity. Within the whole group, students will view a short video clip and discuss examples of primary sources while completing a note graphic organizer. Students will file this in their binder for future reference. This note organizer could also be incorporated into an interactive notebook.
During the small group/partner activity, students will analyze a schoolhouse photograph with their partners and infer or draw conclusions based on their observations and photo analysis graphic organizer. Students will complete a Ticket to Read- either written or oral- on what primary sources are and examples of them.
