I have used this set of spelling papers with my second grade students in some form or another for the past ten years. Each of these papers is designed to accommodate 18 words. Please feel free to adjust the number to meet your needs. These spelling papers do not constitute a complete spelling program. They do, however, encourage students to learn structural and phonetic spelling patterns by giving them opportunities to recall and write the words in a variety of contextual and noncontextual settings.
The worksheets in this packet include:
A contract - A record of the words for that week that can be taken home for study.
A set of blank flashcards - Students copy their words onto them, cut them apart, and keep them in their desks where they can be easily retrieved.
See-Say-Spell-Check - This page introduces a study technique that can be used at home and in the classroom.
An ABC order page
A blank Word Search
An Open Sort worksheet - Students sort and resort their spelling words according to a variety of phonic or structural criteria.
Two sentence writing papers - Run back to back, the kids write 10 sentences to reinforce the fact that correct spelling is just one of the skills required in order to make ones writing understandable and easy to read.
Rainbow words - A worksheet that gives the kids the opportunity to burn the weekly spelling pattern into their brains!
Even/Odd Words - A worksheet that combines language arts with math objectives
The weekly test paper
Each worksheets purpose and use is explained fully in the directions I provide with this unit. I have tried to make each sheet visually appealing and easy for kids to understand. These worksheets could be used at all elementary grade levels with or without modification. Enjoy!
