Please enjoy this kinder-friendly 5-page book about Pilgrims! Use the Scholastic Book "Sarah Morton's Day," or the YouTube Read-a-Loud version. Because all students enter a grade level at various levels of ability, I challenge students to write the first sound of an unknown word or to sound the word out if they have phonemic awareness. Each day, students complete a page during writing class. Each Friday, students bring their book home and practice concepts of print such as reading top to bottom, left to right, 1:1 correspondence, and first sound fluency by reading their completed book to their family at home! The rubric at the bottom is a great way for students to take ownership of their writing and for teachers and parents to track their writing goals and accomplishments. When a student has completed a page, I give them check marks at the bottom of the page for each category. We then have a conversation about the checks that the student did not get. At this time, the student uses a colored pencil, "fix-it-pencil," to make corrections. Student can make corrections, then check off the missing checkmarks which helps with writing accountability and confidence! The numbers at the bottom help students to navigate through their book and practice number sense.
