This rating scale can help assess a primary student’s writing sample. This tool could be used with the whole class, a small group, or an individual student. Ask the student(s) to write about a topic and record the amount of time given. Some topics I like to use with primary students include: If you could be any animal which one would you be and why? Describe your bedroom and all the things that are in it. Re-tell me a fairy tale such as Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs. Weekly journal entries could also be used with this scale.
After collecting the writing samples, assess each one using the rating scale. If used for the whole class, this could show the specific areas that many students are struggling with, which can aid in the planning of future lessons. Also, this scale will help identify students who may need extra intervention to learn key writing skills. Ideally, this rating scale can be used at least once per term so student progress can be measured and tracked.
