Description

Help build your students' understanding of prime and composite numbers with this set of 32 task cards and printables.

Math Common Core State Standards addressed –
4.OA.4 – Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is prime or composite.

Included in this product are:
• student journal insert (two versions: color and black & white)
• 32 task cards
• student answer sheet
• answer key
• prime & composite activity sheet (two-sided)
• scoring guide for activity sheet

Use the graphic reference sheet, sized to fit in a standard journal, to introduce or review the concepts of "prime" and "composite." Then, have your students work in pairs, small groups, or even on their own to work through the 32 task cards. [This set of cards is also perfect for a quick game of Scoot!]

As the kids work on the cards, they will have to identify numbers as prime and composite. The cartoon numbers on the cards reinforce which one-digit numbers are prime and which are composite. The journal insert and cards will also help address the common misconceptions that 1 is a prime number and that all odd numbers are prime - misunderstandings that I notice in my own students year after year.

Once the students have practiced with the task cards, use the included 2-page task to assess your students' understanding of prime and composite numbers.
