Primer Sight Word Workbook

This workbook focuses on the second list of the 220 sight words most commonly found in print. The pages of the workbook are organized in the exact same order of the second list of words organized by frequency. Each page features the respective sight word within a phrase or sentence, made up of words found within this list of 52 words and from the first list of 40 words. Each workbook page has several activities to teach/reinforce sight word automaticity with the featured word of the page, as well as words from the second and first list.

These pages can be given to students to complete independently, however, maximum benefit can be achieved when used within guided instruction, with teacher-modeled assistance and repeated practice/verbalization of sight word(s).

On each page:

  • Featured sight word (each page organized in exact order of sight word list by frequency)
  • Reading sight words in context: a phrase/sentence containing the featured sight word, as well as other sight words from this list of 52 words, and from the first list of 40 words, for the student/teacher to read, and then for the student to reread independently.
  • Handwriting skills: the student will trace the phrase/sentence, and then write the sentence.
  • Printed-word discrimination: the student will find the featured word within a box of other words from this list, most of which have the same beginning letter(s) as the featured word. This assists the student in learning to identify the specific letter combination and order unique to this word. The student will also match words with beginning letter(s) similarities. This activity can also allow the teacher and student to practice saying words already learned (re-teaching), or practice saying words that have not been a featured word yet (pre-teaching). The student will also fill in the missing letter for words that were used in the matching activity box.
  • Fine motor skills: the student will color the featured word, allowing for fine motor skill practice, as well as cutting the letters out, sorting them, and then gluing them in place in the correct order.
