Weekly journaling is an excellent way to practice writing with your students on a regular basis. This resource is tool that will help you get the most out of the journaling experience. This month includes a title page and 12 “print and go” journal prompts. (3 per week) These journal prompts will practice many different forms of writing. On each prompt, there is a letter indicating what genre of writing the students will be practicing.
E – Expository
S – Sequence
PR – Personal Response
For each prompt, there is a universal planning and picture page for student use.
The Writer’s Checklist page can be used for self monitoring and to promote editing and revising skills. This can laminated and reused for every journal writing task. The extra lines can be used to add an additional item to their checklist as you continue to teach different skills. For example, you might have them write “I used commas correctly in my writing.” This can also be used to help differentiate your Language Arts program. Have a student having trouble with reversals? Have that as the last item on their checklist. Have a student ready for a challenge? Have them try to add more complex sentences!
