This journal was created for students in 3rd through 5th grade. There are 63 pages, each with a different, engaging prompt for students to write about. Teachers can print the entire book and give a copy to each child or hand out a page or two a week. It also works nicely as a literacy station or as morning work.
Providing students with an opportunity to practice their writing skills by writing about topics they can relate to is a win-win for everyone. There is enough space on each page for students to address the prompt, but not so much space that they become overwhelmed and feel defeated before even starting the task.
I have included a short checklist at the bottom of each journal page because it helps all students demonstrate responsibility for their own success. Even though this is a journal, students are still accountable for making sure their work meets a certain level of quality. We want students to feel free to express themselves in their journals, all while being mindful that there are expectations for them as writers.
In order to make full use of the checklist, some pre-teaching is required to explain what is meant by checklist items: My work looks smart (neat writing) and My work sounds smart (makes sense).
The product consists of:
• 1 title page
• 63 pages of different journal writing prompts
• 2 different blank pages (one with space for an illustration, one with lines only) **please note, the blank pages are not editable on computer, teachers/students must print the prompts in pen/pencil
Please make sure this product is right for you by downloading the preview. It shows a very good sampling of the items that are included in this product. I’d hate for you to buy it and find it’s not what you expected.
