I designed these journal pages after I grew tired of workbook pages. I tried other interactive journals, but I don’t have the copy counts or paper budget to make all the cute, lift-the-flap type journals. Plus, the amount of time it took to cut and glue all of that stuff just didn’t match the learning value of the task. Enter my journal pages! I condensed everything I wanted to teach for the week into one page. The kids now do so much more writing and responding. I’ve had fifth grade teachers comment that they can’t believe how much writing we do! I’ve included examples of my kids’ notebooks, but feel free to set up your journals in whatever way works for you.

The journals follow the Journeys 2014 curriculum. There are instances where I have reworded a question or task because I thought it could be better. Also, the grammar and vocabulary tasks assume you’ve taught the lesson from the curriculum before they start working. I often use the examples from the projectables or teacher’s guides as part of the students’ work. I recommend reading the journal prompts when you’re planning each week to make sure you have anything you might need for the task. I tried to keep it simple and put the bulk of the work on the kids. They’re definitely going to get in a TON of writing practice!

We cut and glue our journals as part of our morning work every Monday. I spent the first 5 weeks or so modeling how to set up their journals, then they (well, most of them) had it. I use regular spiral wide-ruled notebooks. We end up using 2 notebooks each year. One for lessons 1-15 and the other for lessons 16-30.
