This math toolkit is the perfect way for your elementary students to remember the math vocabulary, strategies, and skills they practice in the classroom. This is perfect for special educations students who need visual cues to complete math tasks and activities.
✱What is the focus of this product?
This product is a printable, portable math toolkit. Over 70 cards are included that use key vocabulary, strategies and skills as well as manipulatives to help students complete a math task. This product is the perfect way for students to have what they need at their fingertips.
✱Why is this product unique?
As a special education teacher, my students would do so well with an activity during a lesson but have trouble recalling the information at later times, like during homework or even the lesson the following day. I have created (and tested) this material over several years and with many students-special and general education. Students love the easy to understand visuals that are presented and are so more confident in working on math tasks independently. They love that they can take it home and use it when their grownup might not have time to help with homework.
✱What is included with my purchase?
This includes over 70 cards, several pages of dividers, and a blank template. Students can use their pencils and crayons to create cards that they feel are meaningful and important! I always give my students some blank cards, so they can create their own cards for concepts they personally find challenging.
✱How do I make this product?
Prep is so easy! Just print the pages and run them through the paper cutter. Since all the cuts are straight lines and identical, you can cut more than one page at once. I’d recommend printing the dividers on card stock. This will allow non-readers to flip to the correct section. Punch a hole in each card and put on a metal ring!
To make life even easier, there are two different printing options included. In version one, one page has 4 identical cards. This would be great to print if you needed several copies, for instance one for each student in your classroom. You can print one copy, and cut several pages at once. As you cut, punch them and put them on the ring. Every ring will have one copy of each page! Version two has the exact same cards but each page has 4 unique cards. This is great for if you are only printing one or two copies. This prevents you from wasting paper and toner!
✱How do my students use this product?
My students are given a new card as we approach a topic. I never give them all 70 cards at once-that would be too overwhelming. As I give them to the students we talk about which section they belong in, and students put them in. We use the cards during instruction time, and students are encouraged to use them during independent time. I keep several sets in my independent math center, students keep their own personal set in their desk and I also have a few extra sets that can go home for homework help if a child or parent requests them.
✱Is there a black and white option available?
This product is not available in black and white. Almost every page of content is full color. I have found that students really need the colors to help make sense of the steps to complete, especially on the strategy cards. Of course, you could always print this as "grey scale" on your black and white printer, but it is likely to have some quality loss and not be as beneficial to your students.
✱What grade level does this work for?
The skills on these cards include basic skills learned in younger grades (such as how to add single digit numbers on a number line) as well as skills learned in older grades (such as a reminder on the order of operations). This product works well for students in grades 3-5. There are basic skills that allows students to refer back to foundational knowledge that they might have forgotten as well as grade level skills and vocabulary. The product is so discrete that a student could be looking at a foundational skill, such as the included hundreds chart, and other students might just think he is looking at the card for multiplying fractions. Students are less likely to be embarrassed if everyone has a ring and no one knows who is using which cards.
✱Are there any worksheets with this?
No, this is not a worksheet-based product. These cards are so universal, they can be used with virtually any worksheet, math series, online activity, lesson, or test. They do not have to be used with only a certain program, they were designed for math standards from 3rd grade through 5th grade.
