PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Integrate Reading, Writing, and Art!

Proficient readers visualize what they are reading! Reinforce visualization with these Draw & Write Literature Response templates, which prompt students to draw their response to literature, then write to explain, clarify, and describe the ideas depicted in their drawings.

While this strategy motivates all students to think about the text and expand their writing, research shows it is especially effective for visual learners, ELL students, reluctant writers, and students with special needs. In addition to setting students up for successful writing, drawing their responses to literature prior to writing can also help students remember significant text details, increasing comprehension skills and recall!

The literature-response prompts are generic enough to be used with a variety of fiction selections, and specific enough to address many story elements.

Use these templates for literature responses with
- in-class reading of specific books and stories
- whole class read-alouds
- independent, self-selected reading.
- readers’ and writers’ workshop
- independent reading
- reading at home, to go along with reading logs

This packet includes eighteen Draw & Write Literature Response printables. Each page includes simple directions for drawing and writing, a defined space for drawing, and clear, unlined space for writing.

Included are prompts about

- character
- setting
- main idea
- problem & solution
- sequencing
- plot structure
- making comparisons
- making predictions
- using descriptive vocabulary
- stating personal opinions
- supporting personal opinions

These literature response templates can be used with any kind of reading program and can also be used as a self-selected writing choice for students as part of readers’ and writers’ workshop.
