The printables in this file are designed to help you teach your first grade students how to respond to a fiction or non-fiction text. The lessons are not included, but I have provided a list of some sample lessons that you may use as a springboard for teaching response writing. I teach this unit over a 10-12 day period starting with a group project in which we respond to a text that I have previously read aloud. After the group modeling stage, we move on to responding to texts that we may have in our book boxes.
Goals for response writing:
Understanding the purpose for writing a response piece
Learning to express an opinion (likes/dislikes)
Supporting the response with details from the text
Understanding the features of response writing
Working through the writing process (draft, revise, edit, publish)
