What is the probability of your students will learn from this activity? Pretty likely! Remember in mathematics, permutations order matters! Whereas combinations (in math) order does NOT matter. In this activity the scoop on top does matter! I always save the best for last!
Using student make ice-cream scoops, they manipulate the possible permutations of two and three scoops of ice-cream. They begin with just two scoops- Either AB or BA.
Then they move on to three scoops: ABC, ACB, BAC, BCA, CAB, CBA
As a challenge: Have students make a fourth scoop! How many different permutations are possible? What is the probability that A will be on top?
Check out the follow up activity on combinations.
