This activity is broken into three parts. The first part uses a frequency distribution of Words With Friends tiles to explore simple probability, addition rule, and complements. The second part allows the student to use an empirical method to find the frequency of letters used in the English language and to find empirical probabilities. Books or magazines are needed to complete Part II. The third part asks for comparisons between the probabilities of the Words With Friends tiles and the empirical probabilities. There is also a comparison to a table on letter usage in words that is derived from the Oxford Dictionary. A tally worksheet is included for Part II.
