In this activity, students solve six different problems with equivalent answers. The 6 different problems practice the following concepts:
Locating probability on a number line
Calculating an expected value
Determining whether two events are equally likely
Calculating experimental probability
Listing outcomes of two compound events
Calculating probability of given events using the list of outcomes
Once solve, students partner up and compare answers and methods of solving the problems. Then the pair of students fill out a reflections page, in which they discuss and describe in words different methods of solving each problem.
This activity encourages students to collaborate and discuss problems. If students come up with different answers, they can work together to figure out who is correct.
