Introduce or review probability with these investigations to engage and enrich understanding. Statistics and probability play an integrated part of our lives and in how we make decisions based on information available.
Probability exercises allows students:
-gather appropriate information for simple analysis
-calculate probability percentage from the whole
-record data on graphic organizer
-evaluate own research and compare results with others, answering related questions in how probability affects results
PROBABILITY OF NUMBERS Investigation: Examine how frequently a single number can be rolled using a die, and how long it takes to roll each number possible.
PROBABILITY OF SUMS Investigation: Examine how frequently a two-number sum can be rolled, and which sum is rolled the most often and why.
PROBABILITY OF LETTERS Investigation: Examine how frequently letters appear in written text, and which type of letter is used the most often in the English language by comparing various text samples.
All three activities can be used for introduction to probability or to extend learning, depending on grade level.
