PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In this lesson, students practice a variety of math skills using a gumball experiment. This lesson could be done as a whole class or in small groups. Each group would be given a bag of different colored gumballs. Before starting, the students would place the paper gumballs on a chance line to show the likelihood of getting each color based on what is in their bag (I used sentence strips and labeled them from impossible to certain with words like very unlikely, unlikely, 50/50, likely, and very likely in between). Without looking, students will take turns picking out a gumball and will keep track of their data on a tally chart. They will repeat the activity 20 times. They will then use their data to construct a bar graph of their results. Have them look at their chance line again and change their predictions now that there are less gumballs in the bag. They can then do 20 more trials and record their results. Then, have them compare the results they got the first time to the second time and have a discussion about how the probabilities changed. File includes directions page, tally chart, graph template, and colored paper gumballs to use on their chance line.
