Product Description
This is a mystery-themed file-folder board game for students to create. This product provides students with an opportunity to use their critical thinking skills while learning about probability, fair games, and procedural writing.

I created this product for my students to complement our unit on Probability in Math. Students had a lot of fun learning about fair games by talking about spinners and the various scenarios that are presented on board games. At the same time, we were working on procedural writing in our Writer’s Workshop, so I thought the two would work quite nicely together.

Students will learn about the importance of careful planning when creating a fair game when they add different features such as "move ahead two spaces" or "move back one space." They'll need to use critical thinking skills to make sure their game "works" for players and doesn't have them set up in a "move ahead, now move back" loop.

I created a six-slide PowerPoint presentation to share with my class prior to having them begin this project. I wanted them to be familiar with the features of a board game before they create their own. I have included a link to the PowerPoint file within this product. It's free, and you’re welcome to download it and edit it to suit your needs. The PowerPoint is designed to work with PowerPoint 2010 and 2013. Please do not rate the PowerPoint when providing feedback on this product.

I invited my students to choose a mystery that was to be solved via their game. Many students chose mysteries such as: The Case of the Missing Cookies or The Case of the Missing Hockey Skates. They really had a lot of fun with this and enjoyed coming up with their own mystery that players would “solve” as a result of winning the game.

I was so pleased with how engaged and on task everyone was throughout this project. It’s a product that can be easily differentiated to suit the needs of all students and can be used any time throughout the school year.

The entire product is 11 pages long, with the student worksheets being 4 pages.

Please download the preview to see everything that is included with this product. Thank you for visiting my store. I hope you’ll come again!
