This Essential Supplemental has always been a favorite activity for my students. I have used this activity in both 3rd and 5th grade math classes. I have included teacher notes of suggested set up and possible extensions. In this activity students work in pairs, taking turns pulling out starbursts from a brown paper bag. They tally the results and make predictions of how many of each color are in their bag based on their pulls. Students convert their tallies into fractions, add fractions, and explain their thinking in this activity.
