In this problem based learning project, students create updated policies for real schools to take into account the current events related to free speech. Begin with a discussion on current events related to free speech and hate speech, then provide students with situations that are different for each group. Have students identify the specific school in their situation, the problem the school is facing, and how the school will adapt to the current climate. What do they propose they should do in order to help the school? Each group will present their policy and be assessed by a panel of "experts" who you invite into your classroom. Students then use that information to adapt or change their policies individually before submitting their final copies.
