In this lesson I started with a Notice and Wonder on a map I made of Dory's journey in Finding Dory. I had students notice things about the map before asking questions they thought they might be answering. I then had students use their mental math strategies to predict the total amount of miles Dory traveled. Then, students were given multiple types of manipulatives and math tools to find the answer. Students worked in groups to find the answer and they were able to walk around and evaluate other groups strategies. Finally, we were able to come back to the predictions and then take the lesson a step further. In the beginning, I told the students how far Dory thought she traveled. To close the lesson we used some subtraction strategies using a number line to solve how many more miles Dory actually swam than she thought she swam. The numbers can be adjusted according to your class!
