** UPDATED 11-12-13 ** 20 additional pages added (same problems WITH bar model pictures included for those just starting to teach the bar model method for problem solving). Also added 15 pages of task cards. Download the new preview for a closer look. If you are looking for an ever greater challenge, check out volume 2 here!
This packet has been designed for weekly use in teaching the bar model method for problem solving. This packet was designed for use in my 2nd grade classroom, though the easier problems (in volume 1) could be used in a 1st grade class, and the more challenging problems (in volumes 2
and 3, coming soon!) would be well suited for 3rd graders.
This packet has 10 weeks of problem solving and 1 free bonus week included in the preview.
Use the problems once a week to practice solving the bar model method. Each problem is presented twice: once as an addition problem, and again as a subtraction problem, providing multiple perspectives on problem solving every week. The problems start very easy and gradually increase in difficulty as the year goes on. Great for fast finishers, self start, whole group and small group instruction; would also make a great insert for your math journal. You will be amazed at the progress your students will make as they study problem solving with the bar model method every week. Download the preview to take a closer look and try a sample page with your students.
There are 3 types of pages for each problem: Two full size sheets of paper with each problem on it (one addition and one subtraction; one with a bar model, one without) -- you can bind these together in a math journal, photo copy each week, or project onto your whiteboard and complete together in your math journal. There are also half sheets that include the addition and subtraction problem on the same page to save paper, or to use in place of the full-size sheets of paper as students become more comfortable with the bar model problem solving process.
I have also included a set of task cards with this file. The task cards are very versatile and printer friendly (aka black & white!) Have students work together to match the word problem to the bar model, or match the bar model to the number sentence, etc. Provides extra exposure to bar model samples for students just starting out. All of the problems on the task cards are identical to the problems presented in this packet, so the task cards could be used in conjunction with the worksheets at independent learning centers as well. There are many ways the task cards can be used :)
