This packet is a follow up to my best-selling packet, “Problem Solving: Bar Model Detectives: Volume 1”.
Volume 2 follows a similar format as volume 1, but includes larger numbers for an even greater challenge for 2nd and 3rd graders who are familiar with the bar model strategy. Additionally, multi-step bar-model problems are introduced to challenge your students even more!
Each problem is presented twice – once as addition, and again as subtraction. There are also two versions of each worksheet – one with a bar model for the students to label, and one with blank space for students to create their own bar model (to be used once they have grasped the bar model concept; also works great as an assessment to see that they can draw and label a bar model correctly).
This packet includes 10 weeks of problem solving.
Common core aligned: CC.2.OA.A.1; CC.2.NBT.B.7; CC.3.OA.D.8
Download the preview to take a closer look and try a sample page with your students.
There are 3 types of pages for each problem: Two full size sheets of paper with each problem on it (one addition and one subtraction; one with a bar model, one without) -- you can bind these together in a math journal, photo copy each week, or project onto your whiteboard and complete together in your math journal. There are also half sheets that include the addition and subtraction problem on the same page to save paper, or to use in place of the full-size sheets of paper as students become more comfortable with the bar model problem solving process.
I have also included a set of task cards with this file. The task cards are very versatile and printer friendly (aka black & white!) Have students work together to match the word problem to the bar model, or match the bar model to the number sentence, etc. Provides extra exposure to bar model samples for students just starting out. All of the problems on the task cards are identical to the problems presented in this packet, so the task cards could be used in conjunction with the worksheets at independent learning centers as well. There are many ways the task cards can be used :)
