5 Week unit on the topic of problem-solving for developing English proficiency in bilingual English/Spanish classes as well as Dual Language / Dual Immersion. Social Studies and Literacy unit based on social studies, CCSS for Literature, Informational Text, and Writing; and WIDA standards.
Week 1: Building common background knowledge through a song/chant
Week 2: A Sick Day For Amos McGee Comprehensive Literacy Language Workshop lesson, English dictation
Week 3: Officer Buckle and Gloria Comprehensive Literacy Language Workshop lesson, English dictation
Week 4: Informative Text Shared Writing
Week 5: Informative Text Writing
This unit includes daily activities and teacher scripts. Students develop their English proficiency through bridging skills learned in Spanish to English, shared and pair writing, grammar focus through dictation, listening comprehension through poem and literature lessons. This unit provides suggested activities for classrooms with technology such as iPads available to them. Activities have been differentiated for varying levels of English proficiency, and provides sentence stems / sentence starters to promote student use of academic English vocabulary.
This unit has been planned with first grade students in mind, but could easily be used in Kindergarten or second grade as well.
