Description

In this rational and irrational numbers lesson, teach your 8th grade students how to use problem solving skills to solve problems with rational and irrational numbers! Includes lesson notes, instructional video, and homework problems. Perfect for your middle or high school math class.

The lesson and accompanying guided notes includes 12 problems that teach a full lesson including problem solving/application of the skills learned in the lesson.

The skills covered in this lesson are:

  • Many of the skills from the previous lessons are represented but in word problem format:
    • Classify rational and irrational numbers
    • Convert rational numbers to fractions and decimals
    • Compare and order rational and irrational numbers
    • Estimate irrational numbers

Also included with this lesson is a 40 minute YouTube video of this lesson being taught. The video is great for:

  • students that are absent
  • to show if you need a sub for a day
  • students that need to study for a test
  • to show parents what is being taught in class

You also get a skill check/homework worksheet that can be used for the lesson.  The questions are based on the lesson and range from easy to challenging questions

Finally, you also get answer keys and worked out solutions for the lesson, the guided notes, and the skill check.

All files come as ready to use PDFs. Want to edit the lesson? The lesson, guided notes, and homework all come with links to Google Docs/Slides where you can edit the files for your students.

Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
