One of the most difficult parts of problem solving is knowing when to use different problem solving strategies. This resource explicitly teaches students which strategy is useful for different types of problems. The problem solving strategies included in this resource are:
Draw a Picture
Make a Table or List
Act it Out/ Use Objects
Guess and Check
Use Logical Reasoning
Look For a Pattern
Write a Number Sentence
For each of the above, a poster describing when to use the strategy along with a sample problem are provided. There are also mini versions of these posters (excluding the sample problem) for students; these would be useful in a math journal or interactive notebook. Three practice word problems are also included with each strategy.
