These Problem Solving Strategies will help your students solve any word problem. The STAR thinking steps will guide them through the problem as they use the eight problem solving strategies included in this packet.
This packet will help you teach your students how to Stop, Think, Act and Review, the 4 basic steps to solving any word problem. The STAR Thinking Sheet will guide students through the four steps as they solve word problems.
These problem solving strategies are the key to solving almost any word problem. This packet includes 40 word problems (5 for each strategy) for the eight problem solving strategies.
The problem solving strategies are:
Use manipulatives, beach theme
Draw a picture, summer camp theme
Find a pattern, surfing theme
Make an organized list, baking theme
Use a table or chart, BBQ theme
Guess and check, lemonade stand theme
Work backwards, skateboard theme
Use logical reasoning, recycling theme
Then there are 5 problems for Choose Your Own Strategy (zoo theme). Each set of problems has a different theme with coordinating pictures to help you keep them organized. (Answer Key is included for each problem solving strategies set of problems.)
A student reference page to help them remember the STAR steps can be copied and kept in their binder or math folder.
