Tape diagrams and/or bar models are visual models that are an effective problem solving strategy. When solving word problems, students benefit from working through a sequence of steps developed to help them organize their thinking and identify an equation that would be helpful. They should be able to draw a visual representation of the known and unknown quantities and their relationships in the problem. Using models helps students transition to the abstract steps of generating an equation to solve the problem. The Problem Solving Tape Diagram Interactive Notebook Activities provides your students with two activities that can then be used as a resource when they are employing the bar model strategy:
An interactive foldable that breaks problem solving into six steps:
2. A table of tape diagrams or bar models that students with a resource to be used when determining which visualization fits the problem.
I introduce these activities at the beginning of the year so that the students have a resource to use when working with word problems throughout the year. These activities are also beneficial for fourth and sixth graders.
