Step 1: Picture Problems - students simply read the word problem and circle the correct picture sentence/representation (no solving unless you ask them to do so) - 6 problems.
Step 2: Number Sentences - students simply read the word problem and circle the correct addends (3+7) (no solving unless you ask them to do so) - 5 problems.
Step 3: Commutative Property - students read the word problem and circle both answers - addends both ways (4+6 and 6+4) (no solving unless you ask them to do so) - 5 problems.
Step 4: Picture & Number Sentences: students read the word problem, draw a picture, and write the addends (no solving unless you ask them to do so) - 4 problems.
Step 5: Complete Problem Solving - students read the word problem, draw a picture, write the addends and solve the problem (completing the number sentence) - 4 problems.

(most sums are to 10, but a few are sums to 20)
Uses: homework, small group instruction, whole group instruction, math centers, etc.
Basic word problem/problem solving practice that builds skills slowly until students are able to solve word problems successfully - problems are meant to teach the thinking process behind solving problems, not necessarily to practice facts (all numbers are small - none of the addends are larger than 12.) If you are looking for more difficult problems, check out my addition and subtraction word problem packets available in my store.
Kindergarten - teacher can read the problems to the students if necessary.
First - students should be able to mostly read the problems on their own.
Second - would work for low students who need an introduction to solving word problems.
Subtraction version also available in my store.
