Looking for some cheerful problem solving problems to get your students in the holiday spirit?
This pack includes 20 problems presented as 9 different problem types. With the exception of problem 9, each problem has similar problems labeled with an A, B, or C. The “A” problem type represents the easier/ easiest problem of the group. The “B” problem type represents a more challenging task, and a “C” problem type is the most difficult task of the set. In addition, each problem includes an answer key and sample solution strategy.
1- Guess and Check (includes 1A and 1B)
2- Work Backwards (includes 2A, 2B, and 2C)
3- Look for a Pattern (includes 3A, 3B, and 3C)
4- Use Logical Reasoning (includes 4A and 4B)
5- Make a List (includes 5A and 5B)
6- Draw a Picture (includes 6A and 6B)
7- Make a Table (includes 7A, 7B, and 7C)
8- Use Objects (includes 8A and 8B)
9- Act it Out (includes 9)
This problem solving pack emphasizes the use of a variety of problem solving strategies to address the included holiday-themed tasks, appropriate for students in grades 3 - 6. While there is not a specific strategy that has to be used to solve each problem, there are strategies that would be considered more efficient than others. This is an excellent time to discuss the various ways students solved each problem and provide students with the opportunity to expand their problem solving toolboxes.
