This is a three part math lesson that focuses on problem solving in the context of fractions. The problem solving strategy used is working backwards. Students are required to calculate the starting number after fractional amounts have been removed. The fractions used are halves, thirds and quarters and numbers are kept small. Students use the WHAT problem solving model. This lesson includes teacher instructions, minds on, action, consolidation, formative assessment and a journal prompt. It is designed to be used with a Smartboard, using Smart Notebook software but could easily be used in Powerpoint or used without technology. Handouts are included.
