Problem Solving Group Packet
Problems/Obstacles to be cut into strips
It has been my experience that students are not equipped with the tools to solve problems that they face throughout the school year. When students face an obstacle, most just freeze and are not willing or able to come up with alternate plans. I can't tell you how many times students have come to me and said that they couldn't finish a paper because the printer was out of ink. I then proceed to ask them the following questions:
Did you think about handwriting it?
Could your parents take you to the store to get ink?
If not, how about a neighbor?
Perhaps you could have emailed it to my school address?
How about emailing it to a friend and having him/her print it out?
This group activity has been created to show students that there are many options when faced with a problem. The key is to evaluate the options and choose the best path.
One of the most enjoyable outcomes of this lesson is that you will refer to it throughout the year. Many teachable moments will occur as students are confronted with problems or issues and you remind them and the class of how they learned to go about solving them.
