Product Description
This is a self-checking Problem Trail for Algebra 1. Some people refer to this sort of activity as a scavenger hunt.

This activity is to be used early in the school year. I teach a high ability course, so I use it during the 1st week of school.

Scatter the 23 questions around the classroom.

I use this Problem Trail as an introduction to the Algebra 1 course. It allows me to quickly recognize strengths and weaknesses of my students. Some of the topics included are ones I hope my students will come to my class only needing to review (i.e. order of operations). Other topics, such as writing consecutive number expressions, are simply introduced here. This activity isn't just questions to answer, but is instructional as well.

I have used this activity during on the second and third day of school for the past few years. It takes my Algebra 1 students 60-80 minutes to complete.

Please download the preview for additional details and to view sample problems.

Topics: order of operations, integer calculations, writing algebraic expressions and equations, representing consecutive integers, using the distributive property, combining like terms, finding absolute value
