In the first activity, students will review two paragraphs featuring problem and solution text structures. Students will identify signal words in each paragraph and will then create and complete a graphic organizer to show the flow of information from problem to solution (or from problem to failed solution to final solution).
The paragraph analysis key includes completed graphic organizers, but student work pages are intentionally blank. Asking students to identify how to best display the information graphically aids in their understanding of the overall text structure.
In the second activity (which may be used as an assessment), students will be asked to write their own problem/solution text structure paragraph based on one of two given prompts. Students will first create a graphic organizer to show the flow of their information, and then will use a provided checklist to write a complete paragraph.
