Problem of the Day is something we have with our students for years with great success. The object of doing POTD is to have your students think deeply about a math problem and to practice concepts you have been teaching in class. They are aligned with the Common Core in that they have students not only solve a problem, but also have them solve it in multiple ways and explain and justify their process.
This file has everything you need to set up a routine for doing Problem of the Day in your classroom. It includes a POTD rubric that was derived from the Exemplars rubrics. This rubric is great to use with your kids to set expectations and have them score themselves, It also includes a print out to give your students to guide them in the process of completing their POTDs, including sentence starters to help them with the explanation process.
Also included are six POTDs on topics like multiplication, averaging, fractions and geometry.
