Preparing students to answer PARCC prompts in which they have to analyze, take notes on video clips and read texts is a daunting task. Scaffolding is extremely important; this 1-2 day lesson will keep your students' attention as well as help them step-by-step analyze nonfiction. The text structure is Problem/Solution; it deals with lengthening lifespan, so it is a great one for discussion. Not only does this lesson provide you with kid-friendly links to two news videos as well as two news article links, it all relates to a high interest subject that almost everyone loves: DOGS!
Take students through the lesson easily using:
Teaching slides on powerpoint,
2 video clips
2 news articles
Kid Friendly Language
High Interest Subject: DOGS!
The graphic organizer will ensure that students jot their thoughts down in a way that they can easily find support with evidence from the texts. Then they will be ready to write!
Keep your students' interest and teach them to incorporate text evidence into their written analysis. Have fun with the topic!
