Ever struggled to teach strategies for solving word problems to your students? It's something that has dogged me for a lot of the past few years. So...I created what I hope will be a solution!
This is a Microsoft Word file containing a number of graphic organizers to help students think through solving problems. The organizers flow from top to bottom so that students start by highlighting key information, then state the information they have ("givens") and information they need to find ("goals"), then actually go through the process of using them to solve the problem, and finally state their solutions. I typically start off by putting a sentence stem for the conclusion but that is not included.
There are a total of 7 scaffolded iterations of the organizer:
I intentionally do not leave a lot of space because doing so often causes the organizer to spill into the next page, which can be annoying. I usually just type the word problem into the top box and then add space/additional scaffolds as needed.
As always, this resource is 100% FREE! I only ask that you leave feedback to help me improve it for others!
