Product Description

Ever struggled to teach strategies for solving word problems to your students? It's something that has dogged me for a lot of the past few years. So...I created what I hope will be a solution!

This is a Microsoft Word file containing a number of graphic organizers to help students think through solving problems. The organizers flow from top to bottom so that students start by highlighting key information, then state the information they have ("givens") and information they need to find ("goals"), then actually go through the process of using them to solve the problem, and finally state their solutions. I typically start off by putting a sentence stem for the conclusion but that is not included.

There are a total of 7 scaffolded iterations of the organizer:

  • Version 1.0: All boxes are present with italicized questions to help students get a sense of what purpose each box has in helping them think through the problem.
  • Version 2.0: Same as 1.0 but with no questions.
  • Version 3.0: Same as 2.0 but now there is no implied method (picture/algebra) for how they actually solve the problem (in my class, we talk about diagrams, tables, and graphs, so all of those could be considered "pictures" for me)
  • Version 4.0: Same as 3.0 but now the work is put together with the conclusion, meaning students need to be prepared to do their work and state their conclusion without additional prompting via an extra box.
  • Version 5.0: Same as 4.0 but now there is no longer a space to summarize given and needed information.
  • Version 6.0: Same as 5.0 but now they only have an indication that there is a scenario they need to solve and are given nothing else.
  • Version 7.0: Just a straight up word problem like they would see with no structures in place.
  • I intentionally do not leave a lot of space because doing so often causes the organizer to spill into the next page, which can be annoying. I usually just type the word problem into the top box and then add space/additional scaffolds as needed.

As always, this resource is 100% FREE! I only ask that you leave feedback to help me improve it for others!
