This document is organized by unit, beginning with an Introductory Lesson providing assessment for learning opportunities. Unless otherwise stated, Summer School teachers may choose the order of units based on site-specific factors. Lessons within each unit will follow the three-part lesson framework with Minds On, Action and Consolidation & Connections activities. Within the lesson plans, teachers are provided with a variety of choices to accommodate the learning styles, interests and readiness of the students in their class, their class/site size, access to technology, required materials, field trips/guest speakers, etc. Teachers are encouraged to use their professional judgment to select learning opportunities that will best benefit the students in their class.
Most lessons will take a full class, however depending on teacher selection, some lessons may extend to a second day. As well, some projects are to be completed over the span of a week.
Once again, teachers are instructed to use their professional judgment to choose the pacing that best fits the needs of their students.
Teachers may also choose to incorporate the following daily routines into their schedule:
• Silent Reading (20 minutes) and Independent Reading Response Tasks (see Appendix B for reading prompt questions and sample graphic organizers).
• Journals (10 minutes) - A place for students to write about stories read and/or any other topic of interest chosen by the teacher. (Note, some lessons include Reflective and Metacognitive Journal Questions in the Consolidation).
• Read Aloud – to be selected from classroom library depending on student interest.
You’ll notice that the units plans say grade 7 on them, but they can be adapted to teach any grade.
