As teachers align curriculum and instruction to ELA Common Core Standards, developing proficiency using close reading in the classroom becomes important. While some professional development may describe close reading, many teachers need to experience strategies in order to implement them in the classroom.
This professional development module is a model lesson plan for close reading in the classroom. During PD, the facilitator would teach this lesson plan to teachers using an adult-appropriate text (text suggestion included in plan). The lesson plan, which is designed to take 35-45 minutes, would allow teachers to experience close reading as a student. Following this model, teachers should spend time creating a lesson plan to implement the strategy in the classroom.
Teachers can experience the lesson plan through this model, as well as see a copy of it in order to modify it for their classroom - they can replace the adult text with an appropriate grade-level and content-area reading selection so the model becomes a lesson for their classrooms as well.
This includes the model lesson plan and a corresponding PPT. It is appropriate for any teachers implementing ELA and Literacy Common Core Standards, at any grade level.
