Product Description
Demeanor and Professionalism seem to be long sought after by classroom educators who are teaching today’s tweens and teens. More and more public school districts are now incorporating a “daily grade” into their middle school and high school academics that incorporates demeanor, professionalism, and preparedness that will help students get ready for college and/or the work force. For my art and design classroom, I break down their overall grade into three categories: Academics – 30%, Technical – 30%, and Daily Employability Grade – 40%; however, you can easily break down their grade into two categories: Academics and Professionalism (Daily Grade) that you can weight however you choose.

The Daily Grade is comprised of four area’s:
1. Demeanor (1 point daily)
2. Preparedness (1 point daily)
3. Adheres to Campus/Classroom Rules (1 point daily)
4. On Task (1 point daily)
The daily (Employability Grade) is worth four points a day, five days a week, totaling a possible of
20 points for the week

I can honestly say that by adding a daily professionalism grade my classroom management has greatly improved, there is far less foul language, complaining, arguing and emotional outbursts from students, students are actually remembering to bring their homework (and a pencil) to class, cell phone offenses are almost non-existent, sleeping during class is a thing of the past and my absenteeism rate has greatly improved! The secret…HOLD THE STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS THROUGH A DAILY GRADING SYSTEM! Even the parents and school administrators love the idea!

I have also created an extensive classroom rules, expectations, and procedures package showcasing this daily grade system that can be found here in my store:

Additional Activities You Can Do with this Presentation and Student Handout:

1. Add a place on the back of your Course_Grading_Standards.docx for parents/guardians to sign so they are aware of your grading procedures.

2. Have your students write prompts answering the following questions:

• In 5-7 complete sentences answer the following question: What does the word professionalism mean to you?

• In 5-7 complete sentences answer the following question: What does the word professionalism mean to you?

• In 5-7 complete sentences answer the following question: How do you think the word professionalism applies to a classroom setting?

• Think about the word demeanor; then, write as many words as you can think of that you believe relate to the word demeanor.

• In 5-7 complete sentences answer the following question: What types of conduct/behavior do you think will be expected of you once you finally go to college or enter the workforce?

(Collins Writing System – Level 1.)

3. Instead of giving your students the handout, have them take notes on the presentation or turn the student handout into a notes companion to use during your presentation.
