"Proficiency Levels, Skiing

This would be a really good unit to do at the beginning of the year to help create a common understanding of the meaning of proficiency. We discuss the levels and I show them some clips of people speaking at different levels, but they still don't quite understand. This helps the students better understand the progress they make while learning. It also helps them understand how slowly they may progress so they aren't disappointed when they aren't speaking in complete sentences after the first week of a level 1 class. Knowing they can't expect to run a marathon after they've just learned to crawl helps them to create more realistic expectations for themselves.
