This is a progress monitoring tool that assesses students’ ability to decode one syllable words that contain R-controlled vowels in isolation and in context. The R-controlled vowels focused on in this assessment are: ir, er, ur, or, and ar. Assessment with other R-controlled combinations are coming soon!
Each assessment takes only a few minutes to administer, and you can get a nice snapshot of your students’ ability and growth. Each assessment contains 20 words in isolation, and then a few sentences that contain the phonics skill of focus. There is a student page and teacher recording page as well. Use the baseline assessment for the post-test to ensure you are comparing apples to apples. I mainly use these assessments for my intervention groups, but they can be used within the classroom as well.
