Journeys 2014 Second Grade Progress Monitors
Monitoring a child's progress with the high frequency and spelling words is easy with these progress monitor sheets for each of the 30 lessons in the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys Second Grade reading series. Parents are also kept apprised of and involved in their child's success through the use of these sheets. Instructions on the sheet ask parents to listen to their child read/study the sheet daily and initial that they have done so. The teacher uses the same sheet to assess each child at the end of the week. A space is provided for the teacher to make comments.
When the children begin the cold/hot reads, I duplicate them on the reverse side of the progress sheet for the children to practice their one minute reads daily on that story. I have included in this unit a page that can be used to duplicate the cold reads for student assessment and practice.
Each child has a "Homework Folder" (plastic 3 pronged with two pockets). On the front I write "Homework Folder". Inside the folder on the left pocket I write "Keep" and on the right pocket I write "Return". This helps the students and parents know what can be left home and what needs to be returned to school. I also put two clear plastic sheet protectors in each folder. The weekly "Progress Monitor" sheet goes in one sheet protector, and the ”Homework Reading Time Record Sheet" goes in the other. (These homework record sheets are available at my store as "Homework Reading Time Record Sheets": https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Jill-Moss)
The students turn in their progress monitor sheet each Friday for the teacher to assess students, and the reading time sheet is returned at the end of the month. If you don't use a homework folder, or don't have parental support at home, the progress sheet can be kept in a folder at school for children to practice daily with another adult, cross grade student, etc.
