In this project, students take on the role of a modern day muckraker seeking to expose an "issue" in the school, by suggesting a change in the current school climate. Students brainstormed potential proposals and then I compiled them into a proposal list, (i.e. The school should consider adding more elective classes, The school start time should be later for Middle School and High School students.) In this project, I've included a list of 12 potential proposals. However, you may need to modify them based on your school district.
Students then create a Google survey that they send out to classmates to gain information about the opinions of students on the issue. A pictorial directions sheet is included on how to use Google forms for this project. There is also a mini-lesson worksheet on "bad types of survey questions," where the questions are defined, along with an example. Then students must identify the type of question and fix the question to yield more accurate results.
There is a research guide included where students research information related to their topic. For instance if they are advocating for a no homework policy, they need to find information that shows that a homework policy is not beneficial. Students must also evaluate the reliability of each source by answering guided questions on the graphic organizer related to bias, purpose, and perspective.
A rubric and lesson plan guide is also included. This is an editable document.
