Problems at the Turn of the Century
How should the problems in society be fixed? PowerPoint Task Cards
This activity gives the students 4 different scenarios that are based on problems at the turn of the century (late 1800s-early 1900s). It is a forced choice activity so that students can see what their political point of view may be. *This can also be made into a Google Form for students to fill out and then the class can analyze the political views of their peers.
This can be used as an introduction to Progressivism if you have time.
The last scenario may be confusing for students because they may not understand why choosing B as an option would be considered “liberal” but it allows for a discussion about how being a liberal in 1900 is very different from a liberal in 1950 or 2015 because political perspectives and society is always changing.
At the end of the scenario you can take time to compare the progressives to the captains of industry to connect the two ideas.
