With the implementation of Common Core, students have the benefit of learning math in a way which starts visual and concrete before moving towards the abstract. This unit does just that in 4 easy to understand stages that guide students through the steps of each developmental learning stage.
This unit consists of the following four stages:
Stage 1: Break Addends into Tens and Ones
o Visual teaching that uses ten frames or base 10 blocks to create a pictorial representation of this math concept.
Stage 2: Beginning to Add by Place Value
o An introduction to the concept of adding by place value that teaches adding in parts.
Stage 3: Adding by Place Value
o Continues to focus on numbers that are more easily added by students. It is the method often used when teaching mental addition.
Stage 4: Column Addition
o The method typically taught in the United States to perform 2-digit addition with regrouping.

Math really can be made easy for almost every child. I hope these stages of learning help you to more easily and confidently teach students how to successfully add 2-digit numbers. The step-by-step teaching sheet of each stage will also help your parents to better understand Common Core approaches to teaching and learning.
